Rain, 02/03 Feb 2020

Monday, 3 February 2020

Rainfall in my area has become such a rarity that I’m going to document significant events that affect me personally (until I get bored).

This weekend’s heavy rain was preceded by a Friday heatwave where the maximum temperature exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. Saturday was a little cooler but very oppressive, and Sunday’s maximum was around 30 degrees until around 1600hrs when the rains finally arrived.

Thunder rolled in the distance but there was no lightning or hail in the immediate area.

The rain prompted the largest flock of galahs I’d ever seen in the area to swoop down from the power lines and have a bath in — and drink from — the flooded roadside gutters.

The maximum indoor temperature was 32.7 degrees Celsius over the weekend. The heat refused to disperse even at night because the windows had to be kept closed in order to keep the bushfire smoke out. The ventilation and temperature issues were rectified on Sunday night.

The Weatherzone site indicates that 36.0mm of rain fell in the district, making this weekend the wettest period for the calendar year.

The 7000-litre tank system is now completely full, the water level having risen from about 1.8m to 2.25m overnight (I’ll have to confirm that later).

This is the second major rain event for the year, the first having occurred (IIRC) about 2 weeks ago. More rain is expected for the coming weekend.
